Biography:
T. Isabella Darnell was born in Texas and began her studies in Atlanta, Georgia. Even at an early age photography was always of much interest. There were many vivid childhood memories of "borrowing" the family camera and shooting endless images of Barbie Dolls. After boring of the "fashion" shoots she then turned her lens toward the family pets and various other aspects of nature. School was a turning point. With a newly acquired mamiya /sekor camera her focus shifted to include more urbane subjects. In addition to photographing cityscapes and street scenes an interest in portraiture developed. After a respite from photography Ms. Darnell returned to Texas to continue her interests where she has spent much time traveling and photographing the various regions and inhabitants of the state.
Artist's Statement:
Photography is an obsession! The way I view life seems to be through the lens. Even on those rare occasions when a camera is not in my hands, I am still capturing images. Favorite concerns have always been found in nature, the landscape and in everyday simplicities. Rural buildings and old structures especially interest me. I am influenced by their history and their ability to endure the test of time. Photographing people, especially children, is captivating. Having an individual relaxed and unguarded in front of the camera is incredible. I attempt to photograph "between the lines" and capture what is not normally seen or noticed.
A photographer captures an image to portray how he or she would like others to view the world. This is no different from a painter, sculptor or any other artist. The tools, however, are quite different from the paints, brushes, hammers and chisels. With camera in hand, a photographer can look through the lens and look through to another dimension. This act requires such focus and concentration that all self awareness is lost. At that point a communion of photographer and photograph occurs. I think it to be a moment of sheer bliss!
